Flag of Kentucky

The flag of the U.S. state of Kentucky was adopted on 26 March 1918.

History

The flag was designed by Jesse Cox an art teacher from Frankfort, Kentucky. On March 26, 1918, it was adopted by the General Assembly of Kentucky in 1928 and set in its current final form.

Shaping

The flag consists of the Seal of Kentucky on a navy blue field, surrounded by the words " Commonwealth of Kentucky " above and branches of goldenrod, the state flower, below.

The seal shows two friends greet each other with the handshake. In the popular imagination it is claimed that the dressed in buckskin man is on the left side of Daniel Boone, who was responsible for a large part of the development of Kentucky, and the man in the suit on the right is supposed to be Henry Clay, Kentucky's famous statesman.

The official explanation is that the two men symbolic of all explorers and statesmen are, and not for specific individuals. It surrounds the state motto:

" United we stand, divided we fall. "

"Together we are strong, divided we perish. "

The motto is taken from the text of The Liberty Song, a patriotic song of the American Revolution.

Vow

In 2000, the General Assembly has defined the following Oath of Loyalty to the Flag:

" I pledge allegiance to the Kentucky flag, and to the Sovereign State for Which It Stands, one Commonwealth, blessed with diversity, natural wealth, beauty, and grace from on high. "

German: I salute the flag of Kentucky and the sovereign state for which it stands, a community, blessed with diversity, naturlichem wealth, beauty, and grace of God
