History

1911-1924

From 1911 to 1925 Oklahoma led a red flag with a five pointed star with the number 46 as an indication that the 46 Oklahoma State joined the United States. This flag had many opponents, because the color red was equated with communism, what the reason for the Daughters of the American Revolution ( Daughters of the American Revolution), a patriotic women's organization, was to write out a competition for a new flag.

Current text

The design comes from a contest that was organized in 1924. The name of the state was completed only in 1941.

The flag shows on a blue background a Native American buffalo leather shield with seven eagle feathers hanging down behind a peace pipe and an olive branch. The pipe of peace and the olive branch symbolize the peaceful coexistence between the established North American Indians and the immigrant Europeans.

The color blue is reminiscent of the uniforms of the Native American Choctaw soldiers during the Civil War. The Indian Peace Symbols remember the previous name " Indian Territory" ( Indian Territory ).
