Flag of New Mexico

The flag of the U.S. state of New Mexico was introduced in 1925.

Symbolism

The flag shows the sun of the Zia Pueblo Indians. The colors stand for the Spanish colonial period and can be found even today in the flag of Spain.

The four groups of four rays stand for:

  • The Four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter
  • The day: sunrise, noon, evening and night
  • Life itself: childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age
  • The four directions: north, south, west, east

History

The flag is the result of a design competition of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1925, the Dr. Harry Mera of Santa Fe won. Mera was an archaeologist familiar with the Zia sun symbol, which was found in the 19th century on a pot.

In 2001, a internet poll of North American Vexillological Association, the North American Flaggenkundlervereinigung this flag was chosen from among the flags of the U.S. states and Canadian provinces in the first place. Was praised especially the high recognition value and design.
