François Faber

François Faber ( born January 26, 1887 in Aulnay -sur- Iton, France; † 9 May 1915 Carency, France) was a Luxembourgian cyclist. He won the Tour de France in 1909 and was the first non- Frenchman to have won this stage race.

Faber reached a total of 19 stage victories in the Tour. In addition to his victory in 1909 at the biggest cycling race in the world he could in 1908 and 1910 respectively placed second.

With about 90 pounds, it was the most by far the heaviest winner of the Tour de France.

Faber was very successful even in one-day races. In 1909 he won the Tour of Lombardy, in 1913, he won at Paris -Roubaix. More successes came at Paris -Tours (1909, 1910), Paris -Brussels (1909 ) and Bordeaux - Paris ( 1911).

Faber died at the age of only 28 years in the First World War as a soldier of the 2nd march Regiment of the Foreign Legion.
