Köniz Castle

The Köniz Castle is a castle in the municipality in the canton of Bern Köniz.

History

The building was constructed beginning of the 11th century as a walled convent building of the Augustinian canons.

From 1226 the castle was in the possession of the Teutonic Order until the abolition of the Commandery. To 1261 a knight house and the courtyard was built. In the 14th and 15th centuries, more buildings were added. 1610 the main building was rebuilt in nachgotischen style. In 1729 the city acquired the castle Bern and used it until the French invasion in 1798 as a bailiwick.

In the 18th century, the entire system was completely renewed. Since 1825, the west wing serves as the rectory and the rest of the building since 2000 parish center.
