Medard

Medard is a municipality in the district of Kusel, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Lauter corners.

Geography

Medard is on the river Glan in the Western Palatinate. In the southwest and northeast Lauterecken is located Odenbach. The place is surrounded by hills with orchards. From Medard from hiking sports and canoeing on the Glan are possible.

History

Locally there is a Celtic refuge, castle Medard. Later, there were also Roman. In the 1970s, the remains of the largest villa rustica have been excavated in the western Palatinate in the church. The town was first mentioned in 1156 as " curia sancti Medardi ". It is named after the Holy Medardus. Two Trichteröfen for lime production were 1820-1900 in operation. 1816 to 1866 belonged to the upper office Medard Meisenheim of Hesse- Homburg and came up with in 1866 to Prussia. Evangelical Church

The Romanesque church in the village is evangelical today. It stands on the site of there probably pre-existing chapel.
