Peugeot 604 (1975-1986)

The Peugeot 604 was the first model from the area of the upper middle class of the French car manufacturer Peugeot since 1931 and successor to the Peugeot 601 was produced between autumn 1975 and spring 1986.

History

For the first time on the 604 Geneva Motor Show was presented in March 1975. Peugeot decided to create on the technical basis of the 504, a luxury car in traditional lines.

The design of Pininfarina was an unremarkable, but representative touring car with its smooth, clean lines. Maybe that's why chose the Elysee Palace the 604 for use on official occasions. Was constructed of 604 Technical Center Bavans near Montbéliard.

The coachbuilder Heuliez also offered a version with 5.34 m length and a Landaulet, were built of which only two copies.

The first 604 V6 SL were delivered in September 1975. They used the new PRV V6 engine with 2664 cc. This engine was called the " Europe - V6 " and was designed by Peugeot (604) Renault (R30 ) and Volvo ( V264 ) jointly developed and used (hence " PRV "). The unusual for a V6 cylinder angle of 90 ° and an associated turbulent running behavior are due to the fact that the " Europe - V6 " was initially designed as an eight- cylinder engine, but was later reduced to two cylinders because of the oil crisis of 1973.

The engine power was initially 136 hp, it was delivered with the manually shiftable transmission BA10 / 4 with 4 courses. Alternatively, it was sold as Automatique with automatic transmission from the fabrication of the General Motors transmission plant in Strasbourg. 1977 TI 604 was introduced with Bosch K -Jetronic (144 hp). There was now a standard five-speed gearbox BA10 / 5 and to automatic vehicles came a 3-speed ZF transmission used. In September 1980, the STI follows with upgraded amenities.

In late 1979, the model range is a model ' SR' with a 2-liter 4- cylinder is Einpritzmotor ( 96 hp ) from the 504 completed (Type A18). This version remained until 1983 in the offer and was exclusively delivered to French authorities who wanted an economical yet representative vehicle in the sign of the energy crisis.

By the end of production advanced Peugeot model range of 604 to the 155 hp GTI (2849 cc ) and some four -cylinder diesel engines: 604 D- Turbo with Garrett Turbo and 80 HP (2304 cc, the modified XD2 - machine ), the later in the equipment lines GRD and SRD Turbo was divided. The engine was replaced in the last years of production by an uprated version with 95 hp ( 2498 cc ). For the diesel engine was a four-speed automatic - also by ZF - available.

When the first Peugeot 604 D Turbo was introduced in February 1979, he was the first European turbodiesel in a passenger car, and the first to be offered with a manual gearbox ( as early as 1976, Mercedes -Benz in the U.S. selling the 300 SD with five-cylinder Turbo diesel engine and four-speed automatic start ).

However, the Peugeot 604 proved to be a costly and technically conservative, but comfortable and well- to -propelled luxury car. His reputation suffered, however, soon under early looming rust. To save costs, Peugeot 604 used in the front doors of the 504

The GDR Council of State Erich Honecker used the 604 as a state limousine. A 604 Landaulet served French President Valéry Giscard d' Estaing, the second President of the Republic of Niger as a saloon car.
