San Millán de la Cogolla

San Millán de la Cogolla is a Spanish municipality in the autonomous community of La Rioja. It lies at the foot of the Sierra de la Demanda on the banks of Cárdenas.

Although not located directly on the Way of St. James, many pilgrims take a detour there to purchase. The reason for this are the two monasteries of San Millán de San Millán de Suso and Yuso, both of which have been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The economy of the town lives almost entirely on tourism.

History

The municipality was created in 1022 originally under the name of San Jorge. In the village of San Jorge Church in the grave of the Holy Potamia was and who was the parish church until the year 1542 was. The place later took the name of the monasteries.
