Guillemont

Guillemont ( Picard: Djilmont ) is a commune of 137 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region of northern France. The municipality belongs to the canton Combles and is part of the Communauté de communes du canton de Combles.

Geography

The municipality is located in Santerre about three kilometers west of Combles on the road D64 Department at the Circuit du Souvenir, which commemorates the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

History

The struggles for Guillemont in World War are described in the book Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger.

The municipality received the Croix de guerre as a distinction from 1914 to 1918.

  • Monument for the 16th Irish Division at the exit direction Combles in the form of a Celtic cross with a shamrock and a Gaelic dedication.
  • Monument for the 20th British Division (20th Light Division ).
  • Monument to the glorious soldiers of the 265th Infantry Regiment of the fallen in the summer of 1914, French soldiers.
  • Guillemont Road Cemetery between Montauban- de -Picardie and Guillemont, burial place predominantly for British soldiers erected after the battle of Guillemont (1916). Here are buried the son of British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith and the poet Edward Wyndham Tennant.
