Bernd Baumgart

Bernd Baumgart ( born July 3, 1955 in Wittenberg ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic. In 1976 he succeeded in the aft of the Olympic victory.

Bernd Baumgart from SC DHfK Leipzig in 1974, was been with Roland Kostulski runner-up of the GDR in the coxless pairs. He had little international racing experience, when he was nominated as a hitter of the East German rowing eight for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In the occupation Bernd Baumgart, Gottfried Döhn, Werner Klatt, Roland Kostulski, Joachim Lück, Dieter Wendish, Ulrich Karnatz, Karl -Heinz Prudöhl and helmsman Karl -Heinz Danielowski the aft already won in the run with almost five seconds ahead of the British boat. In the finals, the British were the main opponents, the GDR boat won by two and a half seconds ahead. 1977 Baumgart was sitting in the second of four without Leipzig and finished in the GDR Cup second place. In 1978, he again took the third place in two.

In 1976, he was honored for his Olympic victory with the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Baumgart had to end his career quite early for health reasons. He later worked as a sports teacher at a vocational school in Bernau.
