Personal

Gaël Monfils was born in 1986 in Paris and spent his childhood with his younger brother Daryl in the Paris suburb of Bobigny. His father, Rufin, who comes from the French island of Guadeloupe, was an employee at a French telecommunications company and an active soccer player. His mother, Sylvette, comes from the French Caribbean island of Martinique, was a nurse.

Tennis career

2004-2007: The first successes

At the age of 16, he gave his 2004 ATP debut. He won the Australian Open against Frenchman Josselin Ouanna ( 6:0, 6:3 ) in the junior competition.
