Grant County (West Virginia)

Grant County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Petersburg.

Geography

The County is located in the northeast of West Virginia, is bordered to the northwest by Maryland and has an area of ​​1244 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Mineral County, Hardy County, Pendleton County, Tucker County and Garrett County ( Maryland).

History

Grant County was formed on February 14, 1866 from parts of Hardy County. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the commander of the Union armies in the American Civil War and 18th President of the United States.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Grant County 11,299 people in 4,591 households and 3,273 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer.
