Grant County (West Virginia)
Grant County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Petersburg.
Geography
The County is located in the northeast of West Virginia, is bordered to the northwest by Maryland and has an area of 1244 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Mineral County, Hardy County, Pendleton County, Tucker County and Garrett County ( Maryland).
History
Grant County was formed on February 14, 1866 from parts of Hardy County. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the commander of the Union armies in the American Civil War and 18th President of the United States.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Grant County 11,299 people in 4,591 households and 3,273 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.33 percent White, 0.67 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.13 percent from other races groups; 0.45 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,591 households out of which 30.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers, 28.7 percent were non-families, 24.5 percent of all households and 11.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.87.
Based on the county the population was spread from 22.7 percent population under 18 years, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 28,916, and the median income for a family was $ 33,813. Males have a median income of $ 24,796, women $ 18,354. The per capita income was $ 15,696. 12.6 percent of families and 16.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 21.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 18.7 percent of those 65 years.
