Brooke County, West Virginia

The Brooke County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. In the census in 2010, the County had 24 069 inhabitants and a population density of 104.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wellsburg.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme north of West Virginia in the Northern Panhandle, is bordered to the east by Pennsylvania and on the west by Ohio, where the limit by the Ohio River is formed. It has an area of 239 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. At the Brooke County borders the following counties:

History

The Brooke County was formed on November 30, 1796 from parts of Ohio County. It was named after Robert Brooke (ca. 1761-1800 ), a former governor of Virginia ( 1794-1796 ).

According to the census in 2010 lived in Brooke County 24 069 people in 10,006 households. The population density was 104.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 97.0 percent white, 1.2 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 0.7 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 10,006 households lived statistically 2.30 per person.

19.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.1 percent were 65 years or older. 51.5 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 38,624. The per capita income was $ 22,425. 13.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
