Marion County (West Virginia)

Marion County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Fairmont.

Geography

The County is located in northern West Virginia, approximately 35 km away from the border with Pennsylvania, and has an area of ​​807 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Monongalia County, Taylor County, Harrison County and Wetzel County.

History

Marion County was formed on January 14, 1842 from parts of Harrison County and Monongalia County. It was named after, also known as Swamp Fox Francis Marion, a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later brigadier general of the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War.
