History

Guines was in the Middle Ages the main town of the county of Guines. The Normans laid in the year 928 here a moth, which they surrounded with a double moat. Count Robert of Manasseh founded near his castle, a Benedictine monastery, which was dedicated to St. Leonard of Limoges. Count Baldwin II had replaced the late 11th century the old wooden castle with a stone and the city surrounded by a wall. Three years after the conquest of Calais, on 22 January 1351 castle of Guines was delivered by treachery the English. The Peace of Brétigny provided the City and County then completely from the English.
