Henry J. B. Cummings

Henry Johnson Brodhead Cummings ( born May 21, 1831 in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey, † April 16, 1909 in Winterset, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Cummings attended the public schools in Muncy (Pennsylvania). In 1850 he was in Schuylkill County published a newspaper. After studying law he was admitted in 1855 as a lawyer. A year later he moved to Winterset, Iowa. He was from 1856 to 1858 district attorney in Madison County. Between 1861 and 1864 he served during the Civil War as an officer in the Union Army. He brought it up to colonel. After his military service, he became the owner and editor of the newspaper " Winterset Madisonian ".

Cummings was a member of the Republican Party. In 1876, he was as their candidate in the sixth electoral district of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John A. Kasson on March 4, 1877. Since he lost to Edward H. Gillette of the greenback party already at the next elections in 1878, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1879. During this time, the Reconstruction was completed in the southern states.

In the following years Henry Cummings is no longer politically have appeared. He died on 16 April 1909 in his hometown of Winterset and was also buried there.
