Martinsicuro

Martinsicuro is a municipality in the Abruzzo region of Italy at the mouth of the Tronto. It belongs to the province of Teramo and has about 15,391 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). The municipality was created in 1963 newly formed, before it was part of Colonella.

The municipality is part of the district ( Group) Villa Rosa.

The neighboring municipalities are Alba Adriatica, Colon Ella, Monteprandone (AP) and San Benedetto del Tronto (AP).

History

In ancient times it was known as Castrum Truentinum or simply Truentum and lay in the central Italian countryside Picenum at the mouth of the then Truentus mentioned Tronto. According to Pliny, it was originally a settlement of the Bishopric. Historically, the city was hardly in appearance, but they still existed in the imperial period ( as it is mentioned on the Tabula Peutingeriana ). In late antiquity was Truentum seat of a bishop, this goes back to the titular ( ore ) Truentum diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

From the Byzantine period, the 1547 comes under the direction of Martin de Segura as a defense tower against Turkish pirates built tower. The square tower was used to monitor the proximity of the coast line and was part of a set up of Alvarez de Toledo and Parafan de Ribeira line of defense.

In the surroundings of the village vines of Montepulciano for the DOC - cultivated wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
