Schwollen

Schwollen is a municipality in the district of Birkenfeld, in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Birkenfeld. The spa resort is known for its mineral springs.

Geography

Schwollen is located on Schwoll Bach (Next ) on the edge of the Black Forest High Forest. This part of the Hochwald Forest, is the southwestern part of the Hunsrück. The neighboring municipalities are Leisel, Hattgenstein and Wilzenberg - Hußweiler. 63 percent of the district area is forested. The mineral water obtained from the sources is bottled by two bubble companies.

History

Schwollen belonged country Herrlich until the end of the 18th century to the Rear County of Sponheim and was under the care as part of the management of the Hambach Oberamt Birkenfeld. 1607 counted Schwollen 31 and 1699 nine families in 1790 recorded 199 inhabitants of the place.

In 1794, the left bank of the Rhine was occupied by French revolutionary troops. From 1798 to 1814 Schwollen belonged to the canton of Birkenfeld in the Saarland Department. Because of the Congress of Vienna (1815 ) agreements, the region came in 1817 to Oldenburg principality of Birkenfeld. The municipality was assigned to the mayor's Leisel in the Official Birkenfeld.
