Sid Patterson

Sydney " Sid " Patterson ( born August 12, 1927 in Melbourne, † November 28, 1999 ) was an Australian track cyclist and four -time world champion.

1949 Patterson was still an amateur, world champion in sprint and 1950 in the individual pursuit, after he had taken second place in this discipline in 1948. In 1951 he became a professional. At the World Cup in the same year he finished third in the sprint; in the following two years he was able to win the world title in each of persecution.

Starting in 1954, drove Sid Patterson - his nickname was' Mighty Patto " - mainly in Six Days. Overall, he started at 57, of which he could win 16 with different partners. As Patterson 1967 retired from active cycling, he had twelve times consecutively won an Australian title.

Patterson was the father of two children. From reverence for his six-day colleagues Rik Van Steenbergen he called his son, who was himself active as a cyclist in the 1980s, Rik Van Patterson. At the age of 72 years Sydney Patterson died of liver cancer. In his honor, the track racing Sid Patterson Grand Prix is held annually in Melbourne.
