1980 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

In the Olympic year 1980 no Ice Hockey World Championships took place. Two big tournaments as seasonal peaks appeared in one year as a burden for the players to be too large. Since you did not want to return to the system of the combination of World Cup and Olympic tournament, the IIHF to decide to carry no more world championships in the future in the Olympic years decided.

However, these rules did not apply to the juniors. For them, the 4th World Youth Championship U -20 took place in this season. A venue for the World Cup in the period from 27 December to 2 January 1980, Helsinki in Finland. The B- World Cup was held from March 3 to 12 in Klagenfurt in Austria. A total of 16 teams took part, the USSR became the fourth consecutive time world champion.

World cup

The A- group of the Junior World Championship was held in the Finnish capital Helsinki.

Mode

Approved players were under 20 years old (U -20). It was attended by eight teams who competed in two groups of four teams each. The top two teams in each group qualified for the Champions round. The four remaining teams played in the relegation round of the single relegated. In the master and the relegation round games of the teams were taken from the preliminary round against their opponents.
