The Établissements Ballot was a French motor manufacturer.

Company History

The brothers Edouard and Maurice Ballot founded in Paris in 1905, the company Établissements Ballot. They produced stationary engines, marine engines (hence the anchor in the company logo) and built-in motors for automobiles, for example, for the brands Delage and Barre. It was not until 1919 created their own cars, which were also used in racing. Chief designer was Ernest Henry. In 1932, Hispano -Suiza, the company.

First race car emerged as the 3/8 LC or 3LR. Ballot took as a starting point for the vehicle was the Voiturette Peugeot Bébé, a pioneering development of Ettore Bugatti. The vehicle had a conventional ladder frame and only weighed about 1050 kg. Ballot own eight-cylinder engines used dual overhead camshafts ( DOHC) and four valves per cylinder ( 32V ). Ballot was in the early 1920s quite successfully. So Ralph DePalma won the 1920 Elgin National Trophy in the U.S. for Italy ( he was until 1920 a U.S. citizen ). Works driver René Thomas, before the First World War, winner of the Indianapolis 500 for Delage, reached there on a Ballot 3LR 1920 a second place .. In the Grand Prix of France 1921 Ballot stepped up to the first brand with mechanical four-wheel brakes, and therefore was considered a favorite. In the race Ballot finished behind Duesenberg places 2 ( Ralph DePalma; Ballot 3L ) and 3 ( Jules Goux; Ballot 2LS ); Duesenberg his part was first attempted with hydraulic four-wheel brakes. Goux won the Italian Grand Prix in 1921 in Brescia before Jean Chassagne; DePalma fell out (all on Ballot 3L ).

2 Litres

1921 followed the first street model of the 2 Litres. The four-cylinder engine had 1998 cc displacement. In model 2 Sport LS, originated from the in the years 1921-1924 100 copies, this engine developed 80 hp. In Tourisme 2 LT, the there were 1923 to 1929, the engine produced 40 hp, and in the Touring Sport 2 LTS, which it was from 1925 to 1929, 50 PS. In addition, there were 1927 in this model the prototype 2 LT 6 with a six-cylinder engine and 1990 cc capacity.

RH

1927 appeared the first model of this series with an eight- cylinder engine. In the model RH 1927-1928 an engine with 2617 cc capacity was used. 1928 followed the RH 2, whose engine had 2875 cc displacement. The last model 1929 RH 3 appeared with an engine with 3050 cc and 70 hp.
