Isaac E. Crary

Isaac Edwin Crary ( born October 2, 1804 in Preston, New London County, Connecticut, † 8 May 1854 in Marshall, Michigan ) was an American politician. Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Isacc Crary attended the common schools and graduated in 1827 after the first class of Trinity College in Hartford. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began in 1833 in Marshall in what was then Michigan Territory to work in his new profession. Politically Crary was a supporter of President Andrew Jackson, whose Democratic Party he joined.

In 1835, Crary was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of Michigan. After Michigan's accession to the Union, he was the first and then the only constituency of the new state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 26 January 1837. After two re- elections he could remain until March 3, 1841 in Congress.

Between 1837 and 1844 he was also a board member of the University of Michigan. Isaac Crary is regarded as the founder of the school system of Michigan. Between 1850 and 1852 he was a member of the education committee of his state. Crary was also editor of the newspaper " Marshall Expo Under". In the years 1842-1846 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Michigan, which he was president in 1846. He died on 8 May 1854 in Marshall.
