List of cities in Nepal

The list of cities in Nepal provides an overview of the development of the population of all 58 independent municipalities ( Nepali: Nagarpalika, English: municipality ) of the South Asian country Nepal. 2012 proposed a further 41 municipalities; a decision is still pending. The population figures are not yet available, so the collection No. 59 is alphabetical.

In the local self-government there in Nepal depending on the size and power of the municipality three differentiations: Most cities in Nepal have city status 3rd order ( Nepali: नगरपालिका, Nagarpalika ), Pokhara, Lalitpur, Biratnagar and Birganj have city status 2nd order ( Nepali: उपमहानगरपालिका, upmahānagarpālikā ) and only has Kathmandu city right 1st order ( Nepali: महानगरपालिका, mahānagarpālikā ).

By far the largest agglomeration in Nepal is Kathmandu, with a population of 1,264,676 (as of 1 January 2005). Thus, five percent of the people of the country concentrated in the capital region.
