Midlum, Schleswig-Holstein

Midlum ( Frisian: Madlem ) is a municipality in a moorland in the center of the island of Foehr in the district of North Friesland Schleswig -Holstein.

History

The place name derives from the fact that the village is located approximately in the middle of the island. At the same time there is between the two main historical paths, crossed the Foehr in north-south direction. The name was first mentioned in 1462.

Even today there are in Midlum the custom to cook once in the spring on the dike. This custom originated in a time when the sheep every spring were driven to the foothills, where they spent the summer under the supervision of a shepherd. It always many children had helped and therefore flour bags were on the dike cooked for them.

Midlum was until mid-2006, the seat of the administration of the Office Foehr country

Municipal council

Of the nine seats in the municipal council has the Midlumer Wählergemeinschaft (MWG) since the local elections in 2013 eight seats. Another seat holding a single applicant.

Mayor

For the election period 2013-2018 Stefan Hinrichsen (MWG) was elected mayor.

Economy

Tourism is an important source of revenue for the town.

Education

The town has the primary school Foehr East and the nursery Noah's ark.
