Steinbach (Eichsfeld)

Steinbach is a municipality in the administrative community Leinetal in the Thuringian district of calibration field.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1297. The village belonged until 1945 to the Prussian province of Saxony.

1945 to 1949 the town was part of the Soviet zone of occupation and since 1949 part of the GDR. From 1961 until the turn and reunion 1989/1990 Steinbach has been affected by the closure of the nearby German border. Since 1990, the city is part of the re-established state of Thuringia.

Culture and sights

Structures

  • Catholic church of St. Mauritius The baroque church was built in 1779. The altar and the organ pipes are also baroque.
  • Etzelbach Chapel The neo-Gothic chapel was built by Paschal Gratze 1898. The decor is early modern substantially. The chapel has become known through the so-called horse pilgrimage across national borders.
