Freienhagen, Thuringia

Freienhagen is a municipality in the Thuringian district of calibration field. It belongs to the administrative community Hanstein - Rusteberg.

Location

Freienhagen is located about six kilometers north- west of Heiligenstadt on the sandstone plateau of the middle Eichsfeld. Neighboring municipalities are Streitholz in the east, Schachtebich in the south, pipe Mountain in the west and the Lower Saxony match with the village Ischenrode in the northwest. The highest elevation of 352.6 m is located east of the village, the district is primarily used for agricultural purposes. Immediately to the south runs the federal highway 38 at a junction.

History

Freienhagen was first mentioned in 1304. Until Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1802 Freienhagen belonged to Electoral Mainz and in 1815 as part of the district Heiligenstadt until 1945 the Prussian province of Saxony. 1945-1949 was the place in the Soviet occupation zone and was since 1949 part of the GDR. Until the turn and reunion 1989/1990 there was the town near the German border.

In Freienhagen is a large boulder. It is called Kucken or Boniface stone. Boniface is said to have baptized there in the 8th century the Gentiles. The surface of the stone is inclined form inclined and has näpfchenförmige indentations.
