Location

Thalwenden lies west of the town uder on the county road 110 in the hilly terrain of the Eichsfeld.

History

The place is first mentioned in 1055 as Dalewinthun documented. Northwest of Thalwenden situated on a mountain spur the castle site Winzenburg, a medieval manor house. In terrain remains of fortifications are still recognizable.

The present spelling of the place is familiar since the early 14th century. The name referred to a settlement of the Wends in the valley. The village was until 1802 owned by the archdiocese Kurmainz. 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then came to the Kingdom of Westphalia. 1815 to 1945 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony. 1945 to 1949 the town was part of the Soviet zone of occupation and since 1949 part of the GDR. From 1961 until the turn and reunion 1989/1990 Thalwenden was affected by the closure of the nearby German border.

Died in 1982, who lives in Thalwenden worker Heinz- Josef Große during an escape attempt on the inner German border at Schifflersgrund, where he was shot by East German border guards.

Since 1990, the city is part of the re-established state of Thuringia, where it had already heard some years from 1945.
