History

1892-1922: Great success after the founding and descent

The club was founded on 14 May 1892. At this time there was no football department. It was only on September 10, 1892, the Board decided to want to play football next to cricket. In the first two years Vitesse was only friendly matches. 1894 finally went one under the supervision of the Football Association, founded in 1889 NVB. In 1895 and 1896, the team could win the Competitive Gelderland, was it higher class and played from then on in the Eerste Klasse Oost. 1897, 1898, 1903, 1913, 1914 and 1915 was the club champion in this class. There are also six runner-up title. Players like Willem Hesselink and Just Göbel were the first national player of the club. After 1915 it came to a strong performance degradation. Again and again, apart from fourth place in the 1920/21 season, they played against relegation. On 30 June 1920, was the gear firmly in the second tier.

1922-1953: Changeable successes

After relegation, the club wanted as quickly as possible back into the Dutch upper house. The Season B of the second division was won in the first year, and also against the winner of Season A Rigtersbleek to Arnhem prevailed. Under Neutrainer Robert William Jefferson, an Englishman was reached in the years after the comeback again and again the top five in the league. In 1935 it reached only 10th in the league, which meant a renewed descent. Under the German Heinrich Schwarz, the association established again and attacked for renewed comeback. However, it took until 1946 before a return was possible. Until then, it reached four times second place twice and the first place in the relay, but then failed in the rise of games. The joy lasted only two seasons, and Vitesse pulled it back into the second division. Although you missed its chances of promotion, this success was achieved but the following year. With players like Sjaak Albert and Wim Hendriks, who later also received appointments to the national team, the continuity came back. 1952/53, then achieved his great triumph. Arnhem was all league rivals behind and secured the championship. The following year, but it was enough again only to sixth place.

1954-1984: introduction of professional football

In 1954, the KNVB a new professional league. Some Arnhem players gravitated to this, others abroad. Due to the migration of the players the level of the league declined very quickly. For this reason, the Vitesse Board decided on 27 August 1954 to join the Dutch professional football. This step was sporty and financially associated with great difficulties. After introduction of the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie on September 2, 1956, this step was finally sealed. In the Eerste Divisie they played with good, but also showed inconsistent performances, so that the club was relegated in 1962 in the Tweede Divisie. In 1966, the re-emergence after 1964 of the Austrian Joseph Gruber took over the team for the second time. When the club was founded in 1971 third in the second division, made it possible to fortunate circumstances, for the first time in the Eredivisie ascend. After 18th place after the 1971/72 season, however Vitesse rose again. Overall, only 17 points were brought too little for the league. 1977 you won the Eerste Divisie and returned to Niederlands top division. Twice in a row the league was made , missed 1980 with number 17.

1984-2002: Heavy second division times and establishment in the Eredivisie

Among the new chairman of the club Karel Aalbers the professional and amateur level in 1984 was separated. 1984/85 there were severe financial cuts in the club. These were followed by sporting problems. In the second division it was only average in subsequent years and was lucky to avoid relegation in 1985. Under coach Bert Jacobs was found back to its former strength and was able to win the 1989 Eerste Divisie again. In the very first year, we finished fourth, the best league result in the history of the history of the Eredivisie. In order to qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time. In the same year failed in the final of the KNVB Cup at PSV Eindhoven. By 2001 /02 it was henceforth always among the top six in the league. The best result there was 1997/98, as the third place was achieved. With Nikos Machlas one had the most goals in the Eredivisie in the ranks this year. During this time, Arnhem was supervised by trainers such as Herbert Neumann, Leo Beenhakker, Artur Jorge and Ronald Koeman. These good years, however, should stop abruptly with a suspicion of fraud of 15 February 2000 on President Aalbers. In the 2002/ 03 UEFA Cup campaign, there was for the first time an altercation with a German representative. In the second round of the competition could Werder Bremen beat by a 2:1 and 3:3 and moved to the next round, where against Liverpool was the end.

2003-2011: Mediocrity, internal chaos and takeover

In the case of President Aalbers new insights were always uncovered. He is said to have been involved in inconsistencies at the new stadium and transfers. Thanks to the help from the city of Arnhem and Gelderland province of the impending bankruptcy could be averted.

2003 and 2004 saved one, seen athletic, just before the descent, which resulted from the internal chaos. Subsequently, the situation calmed down again until 2008, new financial problems came up to the club. It was about a debt of over 27 million euros. Finally, the city helped again, and creditors could be appeased. During this time the nickname FC Hollywood aan de Rijn, the association of media and press was ( German: FC Hollywood on the Rhine ) was added, alluding to the media coverage of the club. With the start of the 2008 /09 they wanted to break away from that image again. Aad de Mos was replaced as manager of the lesser known and less conspicuous Hans Westerhof. But this could only get fifteen points until the winter break, and the club was found in the basement table. The former player Theo Bos took Westerhofs office and led the team to safety in the middle of the Eredivisie to the end of the season. With Bos Club Board was also in the following season. There only the fourteenth place was occupied, but the league secured with six points ahead of the relegation zone first. With the start of the new season 2010/11 the foreign investor Merab Jordania took over the club. At this time, Vitesse had six million euro debt. Jordania announced to pay them to invest funds and to shape the club to a top Dutch club that can compete for the championship. With this acquisition, Vitesse is the first Dutch club, which is owned by foreign investors. The squad was then turned inside out. Ten players left the club in the summer, followed by six more in the winter. This contrasted with fourteen signings from June to September, and four additions in January 2011. Among the transfers, especially Ismail Aissati, Guram Kashia, Nemanja Matic and Frank van established the Struijk and Winter Shopping Marcus Pedersen, the reach five goals in sixteen games, where he was together with Marco van Ginkel best attacker of Arnhemer. At the end of the season, the club was in the basement table again. Points with Excelsior Rotterdam took the team on the basis of better goal number 15 and thus did not in the relegation stage in order to avoid relegation. Throughout the 2010/11 season the team was supervised by three coaches. After Theo Bos left the club already in October 2010, left his successor Hans van Arum already in November 2010 out of the office and was replaced by the Spaniard Albert Ferrer. The limited until 30 June 2011 contract Ferrers was not renewed. In May 2011, the investor announced plans to bring the budget of the club in 2016 a sum of 50 million euros to catch up economically and sporty to the Dutch top teams. On 23 October 2013, the Georgian Merab Jordania sold his shares in the Ukrainian wood pellet company ST Group. The CEO of ST Group Alexander Tschigirinski thus assumed the management of the Association, as successor of Jordania.
