Welt, Germany

World (Danish: Velt, Frisian: Wäilt ) is a municipality in the district of North Friesland Schleswig -Holstein.

Geography and transport

World is on the eiderstedt peninsula south of Garding and about 10 km west of Tonning near the Eider estuary and the Eider barrage. A few kilometers north runs the federal highway 202 from Tonning to St. Peter- Ording.

History

The area around the world is one of the oldest settled areas of the southern Eiderstedter march. Already in the 9th century peasant settlers lived here. The living space was created on a sandy levee at the mouth of the former Süderhever, which was a tidal current, once separated from the rest of Utholm eiderstedt. Parts of the settlement later grew together into a Großwarft.

Original name for the current location were: Weltum, vel world, Welte or Velt. A widespread archaeological- historical explanation says that the world was derived from Wehle, especially since World earlier wrote Wehldt. In the world exist with the Kornhof, the Tetenshof and the Haubarg Windschuur three typical of eiderstedt old farmhouses, called Haubarge.

In 1113 was built by Garding from a wooden chapel. The Protestant Church of St. Michael to world built in the 13th century. The tower was added in 1908. In 1966, the church was closed due to upcoming renovations. The church world - Vollerwiek uses since the Vollerwieker Church of St. Martin for regular worship. The renovation of the church building Welter was completed in 1977. Since then, the church is run by the church district eiderstedt and is open from May to September all day. Since 1996 she has been known as a summer church world.
