Wolfgang Maennig

Wolfgang Maennig ( born February 12, 1960 in Berlin) was 1988 Olympic gold medalist in rowing and is now professor of Economics.

Wolfgang Maeenig rowed for the Berlin RK Brandenburgia. 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1988, he became German Champion in the four with coxswain and 1987 and 1988 in the eighth. The World Rowing Championships in 1983, he finished with four fourth place. A year later he finished sixth at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. As a coach Ralf Meyer Holt 1987 Germany eight newly formed, was Maennig substitute for eighth at the World Championships. The following year, Maennig sat in Germany aft. If the roller 1987 still sixth in the World Championships, won the over 1987 umbesetzte at three positions of eight at the 1988 Seoul Olympics gold in the occupation of Wolfgang Maennig, Thomas Möllenkamp, Matthias Mellinghaus, Eckhardt Schultz, Ansgar Wessling, Armin Eichholz, Thomas Domian, batsman Bahne Rabe and Manfred Klein.

During his career, the graduate economist who graduated from the Technical University of Berlin. After his habilitation he was a professor at the ESCP -EAP European School of Berlin, from there he moved to Hamburg. Maennig is Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Hamburg. He was also a visiting professor at the American University in Dubai, at the Universities of Stellenbosch ( South Africa) and Istanbul, University of Economics Bratislava and at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. From 2003 to 2005 he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Hamburg. Prof. Maennig is still a lecturer at the IREBS Real Estate Academy in Eltville (Rheingau ).

  • Transport Economics and Real Estate Economics
  • Sports and media economics

He wrote a textbook on the theory and policy of the Foreign Trade ( together with Bernd Wilfling ) and is the author of numerous articles in scientific journals. For the Olympic Applications Berlin 2000, Leipzig 2012, he wrote for the Application societies opinion on the financial viability of the Olympic Games. He first created for Munich 2018 an opinion on the application issues, then one on the financing of the Olympic Games.

Incidentally Maennig is active volunteer in the field of sport. From 1989 to 1993 he was a founding member of the Anti- Doping Commission of the German Sports Federation. From 1995 to 2001 he was Chairman of the German Rowing Federation. As chairman Maennig, however, was controversial due to numerous internal discussions. For his contributions to the Olympic movement Maennig 2000 was awarded the Olympic Order.

Wolfgang Maenning has extensively studied the Bilbao effect in the Football World Cup host country South Africa.
