Austria took the first time in 1957 in the second edition of the Euro Vision Song Contest, but stayed away from the competition nine times: 1969 boycotted to the event - to be held in Madrid - because they wanted the Franco dictatorship have no platform. For this purpose, from an opinion of the ORF:

"In the meantime, this event is [ ... ] became a Oddities competition, which is completely irrelevant for the local music scene. "

In 2008, Austria submitted a no post. The reason unequal opportunities of Western and Eastern European countries have been specified. In September 2008 it was announced that Austria would do without in 2009 for these reasons to participate. In 2010, participation was canceled because from the perspective of the ORF program director Wolfgang Lorenz, the odds had been " ruined " by the new rules, also was the ORF participate too expensive. The Director General of the ORF, Alexander Wrabetz said that a return of Austria to the Contest is necessary to reconsider 2011. Interest in participating for Austria showed DJ Ötzi, second wife of singer Diana Lueger, Oliver Wimmer and Luttenberger * Klug. Success in competition

Austria won the Euro Vision Song Contest only once, in 1966 with Merci, Chérie by Udo Jürgens. This gave the country in the previous year, its second-best, fourth place. In addition, Austria was still four times on the fifth place. On the other hand Austria landed seven times in the last place ( including already at their first attempt in 1957), and topped the list of most red lanterns together with Belgium in second place behind Norway. Total age of only 17 of the 43 appearances - ie almost two-fifths - in the front half of the table. Austria belongs to it - especially among the countries participating since early years - more likely to be less successful participants in the competition.

National preliminary decisions

In most years, the Austrian contributions were selected internally. 1957-1980, 1985-1989, 1992, 1995-2000, 2007 and 2014 in the other years national preliminary decisions were played on television, which made use of the ORF of various selection:

1981

The first Austrian qualification at all took place in 1981. She fell relatively small from: Marty Brem put all three songs in front before the viewers could vote for their favorite by postcard.

The voting mechanism changed: 2002 televoting was an internet jury, which was composed of the winners of a raffle, 2003, the telephone poll was divided into male and female callers. In 2005, the callers were divided into the nine provinces, as well as in a fictional tenth state, that counted all calls by mobile phone. The voting procedure has been heavily criticized because each state, regardless of its inhabitants, as well as the cell phone caller, had the same right to vote, so that the vote in favor of rural areas and older people has been moved. In fact, it turned out afterwards that the second-placed Alf POIER had received 106,100 calls, 45,000 votes more than the winner Global Kryner.
