Career

As a player

Wilson began his career in 1974 in the Canadian Junior Football League Ontario Major Junior Hockey League with the Ottawa 67 's. In his first two years in the OMJHL he showed very good qualities as an attacking defender and scored diligently. But only after his third season, he was selected at position six in the NHL Amateur Draft 1977 by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, also the Indianapolis Racers WHA Amateur Draft elected him in 1977 also in round one in fifth position.

In the fall of 1977, he managed to equal the leap into the NHL squad Blackhawks and played a convincing first season. Wilson established himself not only as a team, but also in the NHL over the years as a strong defender, who also was able to score themselves. His best season, he played 1981/82 when he scored 85 points. This was particularly the 39 goals he had scored, for a defender unusual number. He received for his performance the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the league.

In the following years he continued his good performances and was still one of the best defensive players in the league. 1985 Wilson took over the post of vice - president of the players union NHLPA and participated with an NHL - selection at the so-called Rendez -vous '87. While he was slowed in subsequent years by injuries, he could leave again flashed his skills in the 1989/90 season. With 73 points in 70 games, he was one of the Topscorern among the defenders and the Blackhawks moved into the play-offs semi-finals one.

In September 1991, Wilson was for Kerry Toporowski and a draft pick of the second round in the NHL Entry Draft 1992 - later with the Russian defender Boris Mironov was selected - will be transferred to the San Jose Sharks. The team faced its first season in the NHL and Wilson led the team as the first captain of the franchise on the ice. In addition, he was the first player of the Sharks, who participated in the NHL All-Star Game in the spring of 1992.

After two years in San Jose, he finished his career in 1993.

NHLPA and Management

After the end of his active career Wilson remained faithful to the NHL. During his playing career he was in 1992 became president of the NHLPA and his term was thus in a difficult phase. In autumn 1994, the negotiations broke down between the NHLPA, the team owners and the league on the conclusion of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, a kind of collective agreement. The team owner responded and locked the players out, they imposed a lockout. The start of the 1994/95 season had to be postponed until January 1995. Only then they had reached an agreement. During the lockout, some players joined European teams, while others simply paused. Wayne Gretzky had called together some players and the " Ninety-Nine All-Stars " was founded, with whom he fought out games in several European cities. Wilson acted as coach of the team. He assisted the father of Gretzky and Mark Messier.

Until 1997, he continued working for the NHLPA, but then joined the management of the San Jose Sharks, where he was director of the players training and promotion. In 1998 he was part of the management of the Canadian National Team at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.

That same year, Wilson was in his hometown of Ottawa a special honor as the Ottawa 67 's player's shirt number 7 officially locked and he was inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame.

After a very disappointing 2002/03 season Wilson was appointed general manager of the San Jose Sharks and has now promoted by the full operation at the Sharks when it comes to hockey -related transactions. Probably the biggest coup was the end of November 2005, when he was able to undertake superstar Joe Thornton, who was also equal to the best scorer of the season.
