Edward Gurney

Edward John Gurney ( born January 12, 1914 in Portland, Maine; † 14 May 1996 Winter Park, Florida ) was an American politician.

Gurney attended Colby College in Waterville and graduated in 1935 after graduating at the Law School of Harvard University on. In 1938 he finished his studies and was admitted to the Bar of New York. Gurney practiced now until 1941 in New York City. In this year he joined as a result of World War II in the United States Army. In 1946 he retired from active service, and studied at the Law School of Duke University again. After his degree there in 1948 Gurney moved to Winter Park in Florida and started practicing again. 1961 to 1962 he was mayor of the city.

Gurney was in 1962 elected as a Republican to Congress and represented there, from 3 January 1963 to January 3, 1969 the state of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives. He then moved to the U.S. Senate, where he represented Florida on 3 January 1969 until his resignation on 31 December 1974 as a senator. After retiring from politics Gurney returned to Winter Park, where he died in 1996.
