Eußerthal

Eußerthal is a municipality in the Southern Wine Route in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Annweiler am Trifels. Eußerthal is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

Eußerthal is located in the southern Palatinate Palatinate Forest. The site extends as a linear village along the Eußerbachs, flowing from northwest to southeast and is part of the river system in the Queich. On both sides of Bachaue run hills that belong to the middle Palatinate Forest. The greatest elevations are the Döreneck (514 m) and the Harzofen mountain ( 556 m ) to the left of the Eußerbachs in the north and northeast and the Almersberg (564 m) and the sweeping mountain ( 531 m ) on the right side of the stream to the west and southwest.

History

The village was established in the environment of a monastery of the Cistercians, founded in 1148. From the actual monastery Eußerthal there is only sparse remains, but his former church is still the Catholic church in the community.

The abbot of the monastery were entrusted to the imperial regalia, as they, after King Philip of Swabia had been murdered in 1208, by Conrad III. von Scharfenberg, Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire and bishop of Speyer, were brought to the nearby kingdom Trifels to safety. The most striking building is the church of the former monastery Eußerthal, which was built in the late Romanesque pillar basilica as and is under the patronage of St. Bernard of Clairvaux.
