George W. McCrary

One year after McCrarys birth his family moved from Indiana in the Iowa Territory, where she lived in Van Buren County. McCrary studied law, was admitted to the legal profession in 1856 and subsequently worked as a lawyer in Keokuk, Lee County.

1857 to 1860 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Iowa from 1861 to 1865 and was a member of the Senate of Iowa. In 1868 he was elected for the Republican Party in the House of Representatives of the 41st Congress. After the successful re- election in the following three Congresses McCrary did not occur in 1876 for election. McCrary thus belonged to the House of Representatives on 4 March 1869 to 3 March 1877. March 12, 1877 to December 11, 1879, he was Secretary of War under President Rutherford B. Hayes. After his resignation was McCrary 1880-1884 Judge of the United States Court of Appeals.

McCrary died on 23 June 1890 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was buried at the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
