Hochfelden (Bas-Rhin)

Hochfelden is a commune with 3453 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It is the capital of the eponymous canton in the arrondissement of Strasbourg- Campagne and one of the 26 member communities of the Communauté de communes du Pays de la anger.

History

Hochfelden is first mentioned in 816 under the name Hocfeldis. Later you will also find the spellings Hoffelden and high field.

Up to the exile of the Jews in 1940 to Southern France Hochfelden had a Jewish community. Since 1841 there were in Hochfelden a synagogue. At that time the congregation numbered about 200 members.

On July 13, 1941, the eve of the French National Day, about 200 young people were demonstrating against the occupation of Nazi Germany by parading ostentatiously singing the Marseillaise before the French national flag. In the following days, 108 were arrested by the Gestapo and taken them through Vorbruck - Schirmeck in the detention camp.
