Souffelweyersheim

Souffelweyersheim (German: Suffelweyersheim ) is a commune with 7548 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs since 1968 to the city of Strasbourg (French: Communauté Urbaine de Strasbourg ).

Geography

Souffelweyersheim is located in the Upper Rhine valley between the Vosges and the Rhine, about 6 km north of Strasbourg, at the department of road D263 between Mundolsheim and Schiltigheim. In addition, it is up to the Autoroute A4, whose closest connection No. 49 - Reichstett is. Through the village the Souffel, a river that flows into the Ill River flows.

Neighboring municipalities are (clockwise from north) Reichstett Hœnheim, Niederhausbergen and Mundolsheim.

History

Mentioned for the first time was the place in 1156 under the name Wicker home. Since there has often been confusion with the nearby today Weyer home, he received the addition to the name of the river, so that it is known by its current name from 1285. He probably belonged to the sphere of influence of the Diocese of Strasbourg.

Under the Thirty Years' War, the community had much to suffer, at times it was abandoned by its inhabitants.

The 18th century was a relatively peaceful period during which the new church Saint -Georges was built in neoclassical style, of which the lower part of the tower is original with the year 1781 today.

Also, during the French Revolution, but especially during the wars of liberation at the end of the reign of Napoleon Souffelweyersheim was severely affected: On June 29, 1815, was totally burnt down, many residents lost their lives. Until 1820 many half-timbered houses were rebuilt again, the church was rebuilt in 1820, increased in 1827 the tower left standing stump.

After 1870, the community was involved in the defenses of Strasbourg, remains of which are seen in the area yet.

Was the place at the beginning of the 20th century still predominantly agricultural, the industrialization in the north of Strasbourg, brought a strong population growth because of the jobs in the area ( Bahnbetriebswerk in Bischheim, marshalling yard in Lower House Mountains ). In the 1960s there was the inclusion in the Urban Community of Strasbourg a new push, the community was also important as a residential community for Strasbourg. Since 2000, there are in neighboring Hœnheim also a connection to the tram Strasbourg ( line B).
