Ostwald, Bas-Rhin

Ostwald is a commune in the Bas -Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the canton of Illkirch- Graffenstaden and is one of 28 municipalities of the Urban Community of Strasbourg. With 11,527 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) is the sixth largest municipality Ostwald of the association.

Geography

The community Ostwald on the left bank of the lower Ill and is bordered to the north-east directly to the city of Strasbourg. The built-up area in Ostwald goes in the northeast seamlessly in the area of Strasbourg and to the south in the area of ​​the municipality Illkirch- Graffenstaden over. Other neighboring municipalities are Lingolsheim in the northwest and in the southwest Geispolsheim. In the municipality Ostwald, several lakes are ( Etang Gerig, Etang Bohrie ) and two smaller forest areas ( Neider forest, Nachtweid ). The eastern part of the municipality area is used for agriculture.

History

Until 1789 it was known as Wicker Home and Illwickersheim.

  • The Gothic St. Oswald's chapel ( Chapelle Saint- Oswald ), which today serves as a cemetery chapel was originally the choir of a now-demolished church. The interior has interesting stained glass windows from the second half of the 13th century.
  • The former Château de l' Ile has been used since 1994 as a luxury hotel. From the 1891 neo-Renaissance style built system ( using elements of an earlier building dating from the 17th century) several parts of the building are still preserved. The history of Ostwalder castle dates back to the year 1226 and the establishment of a first building at this point.
  • In the old town core of Ostwald still be several half-timbered houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Ostwald is on the line B of the Strasbourg tram network. The Autoroute A35 (Strasbourg -Basel ) runs through the south of the municipality Ostwald, in whose area the service area Aire de Nachtweid is. The Strasbourg Airport is five kilometers from Ostwald.
