Tom Lewis (American politician)

Thomas F. "Tom" Lewis ( born October 26, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † August 1, 2003 in Palm Beach, Florida ) was an American politician. Between 1983 and 1995 he represented the state of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Tom Lewis first visited the St. Edwards School and thereafter until 1942, the Central High School in Philadelphia. Between 1943 and 1954 he was first in the Air Corps of the U.S. Army and then in the Air Force. During this time he took part in the Second World War and the Korean War. After his military service, Lewis continued his education until 1957 at the Palm Beach Junior College in Florida continues. This is followed by a study at the University of Florida in Gainesville followed, which he finished in 1959. Between 1957 and 1973, Lewis worked as a manager in the aerospace industry; 1973 to 1982 he worked in the real estate market and in the investment industry. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. From 1964 to 1971 he was among his other activities also Mayor of North Palm Beach. From 1972 to 1980 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Florida; between 1980 and 1982 he was a member of the State Senate. In 1980 and 1982 he was a delegate to the regional Republican party days in Florida. In 1984 he also participated as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Dallas, has been nominated to the President Ronald Reagan for reelection.

In the congressional elections of 1982, Tom Lewis was in the twelfth electoral district of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of E. Clay Shaw on January 3, 1983. After five re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1995 six legislative periods. Since 1993 he represented there as a successor to Lawrence J. Smith the 16th district of his state. In 1992, the 27th Amendment to the Constitution in Congress was passed. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Lewis was a member of the Agriculture Committee.

In 1994 he abandoned a bid again. After retiring from Congress, he withdrew into retirement. He died on 1 August 2003 in Palm Beach.
