South East Forests National Park

The South East Forest National Park is a national park in the far southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales, 378 km south of Sydney. There you will find valuable eucalyptus primary forests and smaller areas of temperate rain forest.

The park was created by the merger of the Genoa National Park, Tantawangalo National Park, Bemboka - Yowaka National Park and the Coolangubra National Park in 1997. All these previous national parks were opened in 1994. The Genoa National Park, in turn, was the result of the merging of Nalbaugh National Park and Nungatta National Park, which were 1972 and 1973 respectively, built.

Until 1968, most of the south-east corner of New South Wales wild jungle terrain, which was known under the name Wallagaraugh Wilderness, and was regarded as a free crown land. At that time, called for a director nominated by the State Government of New South Wales Committee to declare an area of ​​about 1000 km ² national park. However, the Japanese firm Harris - Daishowa wanted the area cut down for the production of wood chips and most of this land was only declared a state forest. Only the terrain in Nalbaugh and Nungatta been declared national parks. In the vicinity of Mount Imlay National Park and the Ben Boyd National Park were built.

The Abholzaktion began in October 1969 and despite increasing protests continued for 25 years. The Labour government of Barrie Unsworth had in 1988 a national park with an area of ​​80,000 ha promised to be re-elected, but from the re-election was nothing. In 1994, then built the national parks of Genoa, Tantawangalo, Bemboka Yowaka and Coolangubra under the reign of John Fahey.

The area is known for a number of species of eucalyptus and deciduous forests cover 42% of the National Park. Temperate rainforest are found in sheltered areas, on subalpinenem terrain and high elevations.

Within the limits of the park there is a large number of animal species, including endangered species such as the Smoky Mouse ( Pseudomys fumeus ) or the Olive Whistler ( Pachycephala olivacea ).
