Toonumbar-Nationalpark

The Toonumbar National Park is a national park in the far northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales, 617 kilometers north of Sydney and 65 km north-west of Lismore.

The park Gondwana Rainforests, which were granted World Heritage Site since 1986 and have been included in the Australian list of natural monuments in 2007 find.

Description

The subtropical rain forests are habitat for endangered plants and animals, such as the Sooty Owl ( Owl ), the Rotbeinfilander and the Yellow-bellied gliders. The rainforests of Dome Mountain and the Murray Scrub are part of the World Heritage listed Gondwana Rainforests of eastern Australia. The wild area around Mount Lindesay, the Dome Mountain and Edinburgh Castle have inspired many Aboriginal legends.

Besides rainforests, there are also cooler and drier places in the park that shine with a particularly rich flora, by sparse eucalyptus forests to dense forests with tall eucalyptus trees to forests with Bangalow Palms ( Archontophoenix cunninghamiana ).

The animal world is waiting for with species such as the marble Schwalm ( Podargus ocellatus ), the koala, the brown back lyrebird and typical of the rainforest reptiles and frogs. The rainforest is an important refuge for frugivorous birds and insect-eating bats. Filander also live there.

The park Focal Peak volcanoes found ( that were active before 23 million years and has remained one of which are steep basalt column in place of the central crater ). The weathered volcanic remains of Mount Lindesay, the Dome Mountain and the Edinburgh Castle dominate the landscape today. The high rainfall and fertile soil have created on their slopes a unique rainforest.

Average it rains every year 1035.8 mm in the park. The highest daily rainfall was 449.4 mm so far.

Land rights of indigenous people

Also imposed on the territory of the National Park Toonumbar the Githabul successful claim. Trevor Close, an Aboriginal lawyer fought for 15 years against the government of New South Wales until he had won the case in memory of his grandfather, Rory Close. In Toonumbar National Park there are a number of Jurabihls ( sacred places ). The Dome Mountain is the sacred place of Githabul for rain. Edinburgh Castle is a Goanna Square and belongs to Williams, who live in the Muli Muli Aboriginesreservat that the city Woodenbong is just 10 km west.
