Harz (district)

The Harz district is a district in Saxony- Anhalt, which arose in the course of the second Administrative Reform on 1 July 2007 from the counties of Halberstadt, Wernigerode and Quedlinburg and the city of Falkenstein / Harz (Landkreis Aschersleben - Staßfurt ).

In the district live 223 094 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012). For 2015 225.300 2025 209.149 inhabitants and residents are forecast.

Geography

The district is located in the west of Saxony-Anhalt and extends from the Upper Harz region to the Brocken on the north-eastern parts of the resin into the northern Harz foreland with the mountain ranges and Huy Fallstein.

The county is bordered on the south by the districts Mansfeld- South Harz (Saxony- Anhalt) and Nordhausen ( Thuringia), to the east by the Salzlandkreis (Saxony- Anhalt), to the north by the districts of flare (Saxony- Anhalt), Helmstedt and Wolfenbüttel (both in Lower Saxony). To the west it has a border with the district of Goslar, in Lower Saxony.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on January 3, 2008 by the Ministry of the Interior of Saxony-Anhalt.

Blazon: " Divided by silver and red, front two supplied applied, increased red trout, rear two diagonally crossed silver Kredenzmesser with golden handles. "

The trout have their origins in the arms of the Counts of Wernigerode. These were, according to legend the church mission to evangelize the area. The fish make reference to, because in the tradition carried him Peter, who was a fisherman, the coat of arms. The Kredenzmesser from the coat of arms of the district of Quedlinburg go back to the old imperial convent of Quedlinburg. The arrangement of graphical elements is based on the coat of arms of the diocese of Halberstadt and county, which was cleaved by silver and red.

Flag

The flag is red - white ( 1:1) striped ( cross- shape: strips horizontally extending, longitudinal shape: strip running vertically ) and the center occupied by the county coat of arms.

Names discussion

Against the term " Harz " there were objections from the Lower Saxon part of the resin, because the county only a fraction of the over three countries extending central mountain range is assigned to and the greater part of the district as well as the administrative headquarters outside of the resin are.

Traffic

Important connecting road is the newly created B 6n crosses the county in a west-east direction. While the former district towns of Wernigerode and Quedlinburg are directly connected, Halberstadt is connected via the B 79 with the departure Quedlinburg center on the highway. The next motorways are the A14 to the east, the A38 to the south and the A 395 and A 7 in the west.

About the rail hub Halberstadt there are rail links to the capital city ( route Magdeburg- Thale ) and the largest city of Saxony-Anhalt (including route between Hanover and Halle ( Saale) ). Other routes are the Rübelandbahn ( Blankenburg - Elbingerode, some with only freight) as well as the route Halberstadt - Blankenburg. The network is operated by the Deutsche Bahn, the Veolia Transport Saxony- Anhalt GmbH and Havelländische railroad. The nearest links to the long distance network are located in Magdeburg, Halle ( Saale) and Vienenburg and Hanover.

Furthermore, there is the network of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (HSB ) a narrow gauge connection in the resin. Interchanges of the HSB to the network of DB AG is available in Wernigerode and Quedlinburg. End stations in the Harz district are: Quedlinburg, Harzgerode, Hasselfelde, ice fields Talmuhle, Drei Annen Hohne, Wernigerode and the Brocken.

In the road passenger transport ( public road transport ) the Harz Transport Authority ( HVB) are traveling. In the cities Ballenstedt, Blankenburg, Halberstadt, Quedlinburg, Wernigerode valley and there is a city traffic. The city of Halberstadt has for over 125 years, a tram network.

In the district of Harz, there is a commercial airport in Ballenstedt. The nearest international airports are in Magdeburg- Cochstedt, Leipzig -Halle and Hanover.
