In this Herxheim remained around 600 years. Coat of arms

  • Short Description: " In split of silver and blue shield a heraldic lily with confused colors, upper end accompanied by two gold stars ."
  • Approval: February 20, 1923, Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Munich
  • Genesis: The origins of the Herxheimer coat of arms go back to the late 17th and the early 18th century.

After the Peace of Nijmegen ( 1679 ) the area had come south of the Queich under the sovereignty of France. This included the fürstbischöflich speyerische Oberamt Loud Castle, was one of the Herxheim. Some rights remained the Prince Bishop. The French tried to win over the population. The prince-bishop tried his hand, his subjects to abide by larger concessions than previously weighed down. That might have been a reason to give the community Herxheim a seal for the village court. With the inclusion of the lily in the new court seal appears to have been reminded both the membership Herxheims the diocese Speyer with its St. Mary's Cathedral and at the same time at the lilies of the Bourbons, the most powerful representatives of Louis XIV was the supreme lord even of Herxheim now.

The first representation of the lily in Herxheim and thus for all visible place in the corner posts of the former town hall Lower Main Road 132, which was built in 1716. The first document in which the Herxheimer court seal appears with the lily and seven stars or above indicated a siebenperligen crown, is from the year 1733.

To the still valid appearance of the coat of arms Herxheimer it came in the early 1920s. After a long discussion, it was agreed to use the lily in the new coat of arms. The reason was primarily the former belonging to the Bishopric of Speyer - the lily is the symbol of the Virgin Mary, patroness of the cathedral chapter. With regard to the colors used silver and blue oriented themselves to both the colors of the cathedral chapter, as well as those of the former residents here Holzapfel family of Herxheim.

Based on the dating from the 1733 seal with the crown siebenperligen the lily was " decorated " with two golden stars.

Archeology

In the years 1996-1999 a settlement of the linear pottery was excavated in advance of the commercial area west. The excavations were continued due to unusual results in 2005/ 06. The investigation is further underway.

The settlement consisted of the second ( " Flomborn " ) until the most recent stage of the Linear Pottery, ie about 5300-5150 BC, the south of this a large number of pits was found, which together were so dense and overlapped again and again that the impression of two running around the village ditches arose. This first led to interpretation as earthwork. In the pits, which are attributable to the youngest section, were a number of human bones, often battered, almost always released from the anatomical association. The number of 450 skulls (at a non completed excavation of the pit plant) shows that in Herxheim many more people were buried, as there may have lived within the recent period of Pottery. In the pits is also found numerous other finds, such as pottery, flint or grinding stones, which have often been deliberately destroyed also.

The investigation of the cleaned bones of travertine and thereon cut marks brought Bruno Boulestin, an anthropologist at the University of Bordeaux to the assumption that the skeletal remains were found cannibalistic meals. The cut marks indicate that the skin was removed, tendons were severed to separate limbs and body parts were systematically fleshed. The tracks are comparable such that can be found on the slaughtered animal bones. A massacre was excluded due to lack of combat injuries. The archaeologist Andrea Zeeb -Lanz pointed out that a real proof of cannibalism thesis, such as the detection of human myoglobin in feces, was not satisfied. In addition, the number of dead would related to duration of colonization mean that over the years human flesh would have been a staple food of the Linear Pottery culture. The study of the isotopes of strontium -87 and strontium -86 in the enamel of 54 individuals showed that they came from granite -rich mountain country, so were not a band ceramist who yes settled exclusively on lössreichen valleys and their fields docked.

In November 2004, a local history museum was opened in Herxheim whose barn cellar of the Linear Pottery and their local finds dedicated.
