Garawarra State Conservation Area

The Royal National Park was the first national park in Australia. It was founded on April 26, 1879 and is about 40 km from the center of Sydney in New South Wales removed. This park was the second area, which was designated a national park in the world - after Yellowstone National Park in the USA. The National Park was the starting point for the conservation and national park movement in Australia. Today it is connected with the park Garawarra State Conservation for Royal National Park and State Conservation Garawarra.

Description

The 18,000 -hectare site, with over 1000 species of plants among the botanically richest areas of Australia. Furthermore, occur numerous bird and butterfly species. The parking area is located on Hawkesbury sandstone. Was built as the recreation area for the developing Sydney after the gold rush brought many people to Australia.

The park contains remnants of pristine rainforest, of which 75 % are no longer present since European settlement. It grow many trees in the park, such as Acacia and Banksia and Eucalyptus. There are also heathlands and the Gymea Lily ( Doryanthes excelsa ) and orchids. Many insects such as Fabaceae, 23 species of birds, 43 mammals and 30 amphibians enliven the park.

Australian National Heritage List

On 15 September 2007, the park was registered on the basis of its importance in the Australian National Heritage List.
