Langsur

Langsur is a municipality in the Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Trier -Land.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Sauer, the border river to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a few hundred yards from their confluence with the Moselle at low water.

Langsur divided into four local districts:

  • Grewenich with living space Grewenichermühle (115 inhabitants)
  • Langsur Louvain with the district Wasserbilligerbrück and living space mill ( 882 inhabitants)
  • Mesenich ( 369 inhabitants)
  • Metz village with the living quarters Kemper Born and Sonnenhof (265 inhabitants)

History

The first mention Langsurs found in the year 978, gave as Archbishop Egbert of Trier, the district Langsur the Church of St. Maternus in Trier.

In the following centuries Langsur belonged successively to Lotharingia, Luxembourg, Burgundy and Prussia. The border situation to Luxembourg existed since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, in consequence of the Sauer river as a border river.

On March 16, 1974, the formerly independent communities Grewenich, Mesenich and Metz village were incorporated.

The Trier city center is about 15 km away and can be reached several times daily by buses.

Former railway connection

The Langsurer districts Metz village and Mesenich were stations of the branch line Erdorf - Irrel - Hedgehog ( Nims Sauer Valley Railway ). The railway line was shut down and dismantled on its southern section already in 1968. In Mesenich the (now unused ) is 827 m long tunnel Mesenicher. The station building of the road Mesenich fell victim to the reception building in Metz village has long been integrated into a campsite.
