Martigny la Ville

Martigny ( pron. - tinji; Martinach German, Latin Octodurum, French also Octodure ) is a municipality and capital of the eponymous district of the Canton of Valais in Switzerland.

Geography

The city of Martigny is located in the French-speaking Lower Valais, at the mouth of the Rhône in Dranse. Martigny consists of the districts:

  • Martigny -Ville ( 475 m above sea level. M. ), in the valley
  • Martigny -Bourg (486 m above sea level. M. ), at the entrance to the Val de Bagnes
  • La Bâtiaz, on the left side of the Dranse towards Martigny -Ville ( 1845-1956 formed an independent municipality )

Martigny -Combe on the left bank of the Dranse forms a separate municipality.

History

In his name Martigny preserves the memory of the messengers Martinus (4th century), after the Celtic place Octodurum 57 BC called, conquered by the Romans and renamed Forum Claudii Vallensium. In the early Middle Ages ( from the 4th century), the old Celtic spelling Octodurum or Octodurus was then re- use.

According to data from Meyers encyclopedia Martigny la Ville had about 1888 1'525, Martigny le Bourg 1'303 and 1'714 inhabitants Martigny -Combe.

Traffic

Martigny is an important transport hub for road and rail.

From the National Road 9 here branch off the road to Aosta ( over the Great St. Bernard ) and to Chamonix.

The city is located on the line Lausanne -Brig (Simplon Railway ). The Transports de Martigny et régions ( TMR) operate railway lines to Orsières, Le Chable and Châtelard ( towards Chamonix, France).
