Pádraig Faulkner

Pádraig Faulkner (Irish Pádraig Ó Fachtna, born March 12, 1918 in Dundalk, County Louth, † June 1, 2012 in Drogheda ) was an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ), Minister and Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ).

Career

Faulkner first completed a teaching degree and then worked as a teacher in public schools.

He began his political career when, as a candidate of Fianna Fáil on the Members of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) was selected in 1957 for the first time. There he represented for 30 years until 1987, the interests of the constituency of Louth, which coincided to Faulkner's time with the boundaries of County Louth.

From April 1965 to March 1968 he was first Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Irish-speaking areas ( Gaeltacht ). As part of a government reshuffle him then appointed Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch in March 1969, first as Minister for the Gaeltacht itself, Minister for lands. Three months later, he took over, however, on 2 July 1969, the Office of the Minister of Education and held this until the end of Lynch's term of office on 14 March 1973.

After re- election victory of Fianna Fáil Minister Lynch appointed him on July 5, 1977 Minister of Post and Telegraph, Minister for Transport and Energy, which was renamed in September 1977 in Ministry of Tourism and Transport. After Charles J. Haughey had taken over from Lynch on December 12, 1979, the Office of the Prime Minister, Faulkner was appointed at the next new government of Defence. This office he held until his resignation on 16 October 1980.

On this day he was elected as the successor of the deceased on July 13, 1980 Joseph Brennan Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of Dáil Éireann.
