Province of Catania

The Catania (Italian Provincia di Catania) Province is one of the nine provinces of the Autonomous Region of Sicily of the Republic of Italy. Capital is Catania.

The province is located on the east coast of Sicily on the Ionian Sea. It is bordered on the north by the province of Messina, on the west by the province of Enna, in the southwest of the province of Caltanissetta in the south of the province of Ragusa, on the southwest by the province of Syracuse. North of Catania, the Etna volcano rises.

The province is divided into 58 municipalities. Covering an area of ​​3553 km ² live 1,077,113 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). With a population density of 302 inhabitants per km ², it is the most densely populated province of Sicily.

The capital city of Catania is one of the cities of Caltagirone and Militello in Val di Catania at the late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, declared a World Heritage Site.
