Sound of …

Sound of ... is the name of an annual forecast of the British BBC, what new musicians will make a breakthrough in the following year.

Background

Since 2003, the BBC published annually at the beginning of their Sound of surveys. These people from the music industry ( critics, presenters and editors ) are interviewed at the end of a year, which musicians they give the best chance to make the breakthrough in the following year. The number of respondents increased from initially about 40 to about 160 for the Sound of 2011. Until 2009 as a top 10 list was determined, since the top 5 are only yet to be announced, but there is since 2009 a list of nominees with 15 musicians, musicians or bands. Although primarily the chances of success will be judged on the UK music market, but the candidates can come from any country.

The BBC lists certain criteria for candidates, as may already have been in the charts it, but have not had a top 20 hit. And they may not have otherwise achieved fame, for example, as a band member or by television appearances.

In fact, most of the newcomers were typed at least show minor successes in the following year, which is why the sound of survey is annually received with great interest. However, it is criticized that this interest may be just the trigger for the success vice versa. So called Guardian critic Kitty Empire, which has even participated in the 2008 survey, the list is a " self-fulfilling prophecy " ( self fulfilling prophecy ) and says: "it will happen Because we all want to say it " ( it will enter because we all say that it is ).
