Contay

Contay is a northern French village with 365 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district of the canton of Amiens and Villers -Bocage.

History

Contay was first mentioned in 1113 as Cuntay. In the 19th century Contay was an important marketplace for the environment, especially for trade in farm animals. From this activity, still bear witness to the size of the market square in front of the church as well as preserved there landmarks, which limited the extent of the market. The church itself is the only surviving building from the Middle Ages, their completion is dated to the year 1457.

In Contay is a military cemetery from the First World War. This Contay British Cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and has 1133 on graves.
